Youth Singers of Calgary
You’ve seen us on stage, now see us from the comfort of your own home! Youth Singers has taken all of the amazing singing and dancing you’ve come to know us for and put it all online. In this three-episode web series, we present our all-new, totally reimagined 2020-2021 season. Along with all the fantastic music, each episode will feature updates on all the great things YSC has been doing, give you a sneak peek behind the scenes into this unprecedented year, and round out the show with a mystery serial - "When The Music Went Silent." In a year like no other, we’ve put together a production like no other, as we carry on with the show.
Since its inception in 1985, Youth Singers of Calgary has positively impacted the lives of thousands of young singers, their families, and the arts community as a whole. When founder Shirley Penner dreamed of giving young people a chance to express themselves on stage, she could hardly have imagined the myriad ways this organization would grow and, in turn, allow its participants to grow. Through music, theatre arts, and dance, we shape leaders, teachers, and global citizens who in turn shape the communities in which they live and work.
Starting with 28 junior high school students, we have expanded to 500 singers ranging in age from 3.5 to adult. Springing up around this core group is a vast community of families and volunteers who supply in excess 35,000 hours of volunteer commitment annually.
As the needs of our community have grown and changed, so has our programming. In addition to our core instructional and performing divisions, we have expanded to offer STAR, a unique program exploring the joy of music with youth and young adults with cognitive delays, SHOWBIZ KIDS camps, PD days, and in-school residencies, and The HUB, an intergenerational informal choir that gives alumni, friends and guests a chance to sing side-by-side.
Guiding our vast community is a talented and passionate group of contract artistic educators, a focused board, and a small but dedicated administrative staff. We are steered by the principle that a musical education is for all, not an elite few, and that providing non-competitive opportunities for music appreciation and performance leads to a life-long positive impact.
We adapted quickly and decisively to the pandemic, offering online programing through the spring to buoy the spirits for our members and community. By Fall, we had invested in the equipment and resources to launch a complete program of hybrid in-person and online instruction, drawing on our core values and principles, and rallying the relentless efforts of our artistic and administrative staff to ensure our program would continue to serve Calgary safely through difficult days.
YSC’s touring program gives our young people the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their talents across Canada and the world, and will resume when the pandemic subsides. As a Performing Company, we never fail to bring a smile to the faces of our audiences through our singers’ exuberance and passion for their art.
Today, you can find the thousands of YSC alumni across the country and around the world exercising their creativity and using the skills they learned in our programs - on and off stage. This is the true sense of purpose that our singers learn in their time with us, doing what they love.
